Film Program #1: The NIGHT WATCH - 6:00 pm
|

|
|
Adapted from Sarah Waters' Prize-winning novel, The Night Watch is an achingly
beautiful BBC production of missed connections and fragmented pasts.
Directed by openly gay Richard Laxton (An Englishman in New York), this
film gorgeously moves back in time, revealing a web of connection among a group
on society's fringe. Opening in 1947, with tantalizing vignettes of its four
main characters - three gay, one straight - the drama spools backwards in time,
through 1944, and then 1941 to unravel the clues that connect them to one another.
'It is an emotional thriller,' the film's director Richard Laxton says.
'You have to ask questions all the way through, piece together the jigsaw puzzle.'

The Bard comes to the barracks in this out of the ordinary piece of classical romance
set in a modern context.
When eight cadets are left behind at an isolated military high school, the greatest
romantic drama ever written seeps out of the classroom and permeates their lives.
Love and trouble abound in Private Romeo, a suspenseful and sensual retelling
of a classic tale that incorporates the original text of 'Romeo and Juliet',
some YouTube videos, and lip-synched Indie rock music. Drawing on the unrequited
love between two male cadets Private Romeo takes us to a mysterious and
tender place that only Shakespeare could have inspired. |
Writer-director Alan Brown uses original dialogue sparingly, letting Shakespeare's
original words address the issues confronting today's gay youth. Brown cast
only Shakespeare trained actors, and it shows. Hale Appleman is riveting as
the film's Mercutio, with Matt Doyle and Seth Numrich, who currently perform in
the acclaimed award-winning Broadway play War Horse, giving brilliant performances
as the star-crossed lovers, igniting with chemistry and connection.

TEDDY, a short New Zealand film by
Christopher Banks, will precede Private Romeo.
A Londoner travels 10,000 miles to rural New Zealand to rekindle an old relationship,
but a stuffed bear will ultimately decide his fate.
