Directed by Bob Christie and produced by Morris Chapdelaine, this rousing and entertaining documentary film follows the Vancouver Pride Society’s Parade Director Ken Coolen and his colleagues as they travel to places where Pride is still steeped in protest to personally experience the rampant homophobia that remains in places like Poland, and Russia where phones are bugged, code names employed, and secret meetings in the apartments of dissidents take place. Coolen talks to people from some even more repressive places, like Sri Lanka, where lesbians face beatings and "corrective" rape, and Jamaica, called the most homophobic nation in the world. Coolen also takes us to Sao Paulo Brazil for the world's largest gay parade and to New York City, the birthplace of the modern gay liberation movement.

In examining the growing popularity of Pride events around the globe and how these celebrations intersect with the human rights and social fabric of their local LGBT communities the film addresses the questions of 'What is the purpose of Pride', and 'Who is it for'? Winner of the jury prize for best documentary at Montreal's Image + Nation Festival, this film is currently screening world-wide this summer in connection with Gay Pride marches and festivals all over the world. Savannah’s own upcoming PRIDE celebration takes place three weeks following our screening and SGLFS in proudly presenting this timely documentary will donate a portion of our screening proceeds to Savannah PRIDE.

Is Pride political? Is it is less an occasion for partying than a daring act from which there is no turning back? As commercialization takes over in our Western nations it seems that the biggest concerns organizers have are permits or the logistics of getting generators in the right place in a timely manner. For others around the world, it’s more political and sometimes, it can be a matter of life and death to speak out and up for seemingly simple human rights principles. This film is a rousing and often joyous documentary for anyone and everyone who believes in equality and who wants be educated on what the civic celebration of Gay Pride means. Pride is a demonstration for the fight for LGBT rights and a celebration for anyone and everyone who values the acceptance of sexual diversity.

Our feature film will be preceded by the international award-winning wryly humorous comedic short, “Countertransference”, about a lonely, socially awkward woman with assertiveness issues who finds her problems multiplied in therapy. It’s a real hoot!

Don’t miss these great films and help aid our support of Savannah PRIDE!
